Dr. Hans-Michael Weber's Journey with Low-Level-Laser Therapy (LLLT)
Dr. Hans-Michael Weber, a general physician with nearly twenty years of experience, discovered his passion for Low-Level-Laser Therapy (LLLT) in 2001. He was captivated by its potential and practical utility for treating an array of diseases, where he found conventional western medicine to be limited. The field of LLLT research has seen exponential growth since then, with numerous studies demonstrating its efficacy in various areas. LLLT is an incredibly potent method that continues to expand in its applications, playing a vital role in promoting health and enhancing the quality of life.

Applications, Principles, and Effects of Low-Level-Laser Therapy
LLLT has several modalities of application including topical, intravenous, and intra-articular use. Other techniques include area irradiation, sublingual treatments, transcranial treatments, laser acupuncture, and photodynamic therapies. Unlike surgical lasers, LLLTs use low-intensity irradiation to generate therapeutic effects, thereby avoiding tissue damage. Light energy absorbed by microbiological structures triggers a series of photophysical and photochemical events, leading to various cellular effects. These effects are contingent on the light's wavelength, power, and exposure time. The therapy's well-documented and side-effect-free nature make it well-tolerated by patients.

Each wavelength or color used in LLLT stimulates distinct physiological responses. For instance, infrared light (810 nm) is known for immune stimulation, activating leucocytes, enzymes, and stem cells, and providing the deepest tissue penetration. Red light (635 / 658 nm) improves blood rheology and oxygen delivery, while yellow light (589 nm) has detoxifying and antidepressant effects. Green light (532 nm) promotes microcirculation, and blue light (405 /447 nm) offers strong anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. Ultraviolet light (370 nm) is effective in destroying fungal, viral, and bacterial growth. Each wavelength also stimulates specific complexes within the mitochondrial respiratory chain, leading to an increase in ATP production.

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) in LLLT
Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is another key application of LLLT. PDT uses light-sensitive photosensitizers introduced into the body, which bind specifically to tumorous tissue and pathogens. Upon exposure to laser light of a specific wavelength, these photosensitizers release radical oxygen species, destroying the malignant tissue without harming the healthy surrounding tissue.

Various substances can serve as photosensitizers, including Indocyanine Green (ICG), Hypericin (found in St. John's Wort), Curcumin, Riboflavin, Chlorin E6, 5-ALA, EGCG, Shogaol, and certain infusions and chemo drugs like 5-FU and Paclitaxel. Each photosensitizer is activated by a different wavelength. The precise pairing of photosensitizer and light wavelength is crucial to PDT's effectiveness, ensuring the therapy selectively targets and eradicates malignant cells or pathogens while sparing healthy tissue

Experience the latest generation of high-performance laser modules
From outside it is quite difficult to apply sufficient laser power into deep tissue (e.g. blood stream, joints, spinal nerves or tumors) due to the barrier function of the skin. The energy that actually reaches deep tissue areas is barely measurable because the skin absorbs more than 70% of it. Weber medical designed special fiberoptic light guides (Weberneedle® Lasercath) and cannulas that allow laser light to overcome the skin barrier by bringing light directly into the blood stream, interstitial compartments or joints. This new approach of intravenous, interstitial and intraarticular laser therapy significantly improves therapeutic results as it produces penetration depths of up to 12 cm. Also green, blue and yellow lasers, which are typically absorbed at the skin surface, can now develop their cellular and anti-inflammatory effects in deep tissue layers. In PDT this technique allows photosensible substances (photosensitizers) to be 'activated' deep within the body.

Available laser modules
In order to enter different penetration depths and to induce distinct biological effects the Weberneedle® Endo Laser can be equipped with the following modules: infrared, red, yellow, green, blue and ultraviolett.

Smart technology – Stay flexible
The laser modules are not incorporated into the machine but attached externally. This modular setup enables you to equip the machine individually. You can modify or extend it anytime.

High-quality materials
Our laser devices stand out due to high quality standards. The laser modules deliver high reliability and consistency. Each machine has a control unit that allows you to measure the output. Only highly elastic and almost wear-free materials are used to manufacture our quartz fiber optics. This guarantees a long service life.

Easy handling
weber medical has developed interstitial needles and cannulas that can be connected to the fiber optics of the laser machine via a light guide. The diameter of the light guide is so small that it perfectly fits into the cannula. The laser light that is produced inside the laser module can easily be applied to deep tissue.

Touch screen for intuitive handling
Select each laser module separately via the touch screen. The following parameters can be set according to your patients' needs:

Flexible regulation of laser power (1-100%)
Free adjustment of frequencies or selection of one of the pre-installed frequencies (Bahr, Nogier, Reininger)
Individual setting of treatment duration

Presentation and setup of the Weberneedle® Endo Laser
Weberneedle® Endo is a modular 12-channel laser system for intravenous, interstitial and intraarticular laser therapy. Topics: On/off mode, activation of laser modules, set duration of treatment (1-60 Mins.), power (1-100%) and frequency, information on laser technique

Application
Only a simple cannulization of the median cubital vein or the median antebrachial vein (like for an infusion) is neccesary for systemic treatment.

Thanks to the specially developed fiber-optic light guide (Weberneedle® Lasercath), laser light can now be applied interstitially and intraarticularly . Never before has it been possible to deliver laser light so close and precisely to the area where it is to unfold its effects:

  • Blood stream
  • Joints
  • Interstitial space

Intraarticular Laser Therapy
From outside it is quite difficult to apply enough laser power into deep tissue (e.g. blood stream, joints, spinal nerves or tumors) due to the barrier function of the skin. The energy that actually reaches deep tissue is barely measurable because the skin absorbs more than 70% of it. Weber medical designed special fiberoptic light guides (Weberneedle® Lasercath) and cannulas that allow laser light to overcome the skin barrier. They bring light directly into joints.

Areas of Application
The faseroptic light guide (Weberneedle® Lasercath) is inserted directly into the joint via interstitial needle. This way, damaged structures (nerves, cartilage, bones, etc.) are directly exposed to irradiation. Intraarticular laser therapy is a simple and efficient treatment for:

  • Knee joint arthrosis
  • Hip joint arthrosis
  • Chronic shoulder syndrome
  • Ankle joint arthritis
  • and many other degenerative joint diseases

The intraarticular technique achieves penetration depths of up to 12 cm and therefore has better therapeutical results than external laser application. Unlike external laser therapy this method also allows green, blue and yellow lasers to be applied deep inside the tissue (to reduce inflammation e.g.). In order to optimize effects laser therapy can be combined very successfully with other injection therapies (e.g. PRP or hyaluronic acid). Injection and irradiation can be administered via the same cannula, with only one puncture.

Interstitial Laser Therapy
The specially developed fiberoptic light guide (Weberneedle® Lasercath) is utilized for percutaneous interstitial laser therapy in order to irradiate deep tissue.

Areas of application

  • Chronic spinal diseases
  • Slipped disks
  • Scar pain after disk surgery
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Nerve lesions
  • Deep inflammation of tendons
  • Strains

The Weberneedle® Lasercath is inserted into dysfunctional tissue structures via an interstitial needle. This technique achieves penetration depths of up to 12 cm and therefore has better therapeutical results than external laser application. Unlike external laser therapy this intraarticular method also allows green, blue and yellow lasers to be applied deep inside the tissue (to reduce inflammation e.g.).

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)
Photodynamic Therapy is based on the stimulation of a light-sensitive substance (photosensitizer) which is infused into the bloodstream, injected locally or applied in form of a cream. The photosensitizer binds with high specificity to pathologically changed tissue. When stimulated by (laser) light active oxygen radicals form and destroy this tissue without harming the surrounding healthy tissue.

The most common photosensitizers are:

  • Riboflavin
  • Hypericin
  • Chlorin E6
  • Indocyanine green (ICG)
  • Curcumin

They can be administered orally or as infusion. Besides photodynamic tumor therapy PDT can be performed to treat bacterial, viral and parasitic diseases (anti-microbial PDT). The key benefit of this approach is the combat of multiresistant pathogens. Systemic laser treatment with the Weberneedle® IV catheter (Y-type) after intravenous administration of curcumin. Infusion and laser light are given through the same cannula.

Areas of application

  • Tumors
  • Viruses (Hepatitis, HIV, Herpes etc.)
  • Bacterial infections
  • Chronic Lyme disease
  • Multiresistant Staphylococci
  • Parasitic diseases
